Spain has become one of the leading countries in the recycling of paper and cardboard packaging, according to data published by Ecoembes, the organization that coordinates the recycling of this type of waste in our country. In 2022, each Spaniard separated 27.1 kilos of household packaging for recycling, of which 20.4 kilos corresponded to paper and cardboard. This represents an increase of 4.5% over the previous year and a total of 666,344 tons of paper and cardboard packaging recycled.
Recycling paper and cardboard has multiple environmental, social and economic benefits. On the one hand, it contributes to the conservation of natural resources by avoiding the felling of trees and reducing water and energy consumption. On the other hand, it generates green jobs and promotes innovation and competitiveness of companies that are committed to eco-design and the circular economy. In addition, paper and cardboard recycling helps to combat climate change, as it prevents the emission of greenhouse gases and favors carbon sequestration by forests.
To continue promoting the recycling of paper and cardboard in Spain, the collaboration of all the agents involved is essential: citizens, public administrations, companies, businesses and social organizations. Ecoembes carries out awareness and environmental education campaigns to inform and motivate the public about the importance of separating packaging correctly in the blue garbage can. We also work with public administrations to improve infrastructure and selective collection services. It also supports companies that want to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging and collaborates with social organizations that develop projects related to recycling.
The recycling of cardboard in Spain is an example of collective success that demonstrates that it is possible to move towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible model.
